If you are just getting into chatbot technology, there is something you need to know: Chatbots are smart programs that have Artificial Intelligence coding, which gives them the ability to learn and mimic human-like conversations.
When building a chatbot, you need to give them as much as you can in ways of a more personalized behavior, so you can obtain conversational flow and increase interactions with your customers.
What is Personality?
I was searching for a definition of what a personality actually is, and here is what I’ve come up with: It’s the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character.
This is what we want to give our chatbot regarding personality; we need to give it the characteristics of being human. But what would provide the best human-like behavior? Uniqueness ─ every human is individual ─ and that’s the way we need to proceed with building our chatbot’s personality.
It’s important because you want your chatbot to stay interactive, and being accepted. It’s the same for us; if you have the better personality, it will help you a lot through your life, in work and socially.
Here is a simple guide of how you can give your chatbot a better personality:
The tone that you need to give your chatbot in the conversation is essential for building the right personality for your chatbot. You don’t want a rude bot; you want a polite one. Give your bot answers that will show a more positive tone, and it will become an easy and fun bot to work with.
2. Picking the Right Words
This one is significant, too, because choosing the right words will help you to distinguish the chatbot from other bots. Make sentences more understandable for people, and even prepare more answers for the same question. In this way, if someone says to the chatbot that they don’t understand, the chatbot will have an alternative answer and give the customers a different view of the solution.
3. Use the Five-Factor Model
The big five personality treats also known as the Five Factor Model (FFM) is:
♦ Openness to Experience: You can build the chatbot to ask, not just to answer. With little surveys, you will give this characteristic to your chatbot. With this experience, you can prolong the conversation and even gain more by offering something. For example, when the conversation comes to an end, ask the customer if he was satisfied with the answers and politely ask if the chatbot can ask some questions that can help him in the future, and provide the short survey.
♦ Conscientiousness: This is a tendency to be organized and dependable. So, when promising something, you need to fulfill it for the customer. And, getting your chatbot to be organized won’t be a problem because it will execute any operation that you will assign it to do.
♦ Extraversion: This one is the outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved feature. You want something in between to maintain the professional attitude, but still, to show some energy. But again, you don’t want to have a too-energized chatbot and sing bad songs between conversations.
♦ Agreeableness: This is a way you can make your chatbot to have a tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards your customers. For example, if your greeting starts with “Good morning Sir, how is your day so far? How can I help you?” and if the client responds with ”it’s been better,” the chatbot can reply with a little compassion, such as “I`m sorry you feel like that, and I hope it will get better soon. Maybe I can help.”
♦ Neuroticism: Is the sensitive/nervous vs. secure/confident feature. It’s all about the words and more varieties of answers. If your chatbot interacts with more frustrated clients, it needs to react professionally and have the knowledge to solve the problems. It’s always a plus if you provide the chatbot with the option to connect the client with a real human if the complexity of the issue cannot be resolved with the chatbot’s knowledge base.
