We are starting to live in the future, and what we all witness in the movies is starting to happen now.
The growth of human knowledge, with the help of computers, is expanding with the speed of light.
The things that are happening now and what will occur in the next 20 years will be unbelievable.
We, as a civilization, will reach one of the fastest growing stages in our history, compared with the nature of our evolving in the way we established our societies from an agricultural society to an industrial.
And in the past couple of decades, we entered the technological stage of our existence in which we transformed into the Artificial Intelligence stage where all things happened much more faster than anything we have experienced so far.
What is Artificial Intelligence and What Have We Accomplished So Far?
The ability of a program or machine to think and learn and be able to mimic human behavior is called AI.
Software developers are in constant need to achieve intelligent machines that will, in fact, act and think like a human.
This was achieved a while back in the late 1980s, with one of the oldest games “Chess,” where computer programs accomplished to learn and beat a chess master.
IBM developed a Chess computer called Deep Blue which was programmed to make a logical decision and play the game on its own. One of the first significant successes on Deep Blue was back in 1996 where Deep Blue beat world champion Gary Kasparov in one game out of six. After this match, they upgraded the computer, and in May 1997, played with Kasparov again, and Deep Blue won six games in the match.
This was a stunning accomplishment for the AI world and was a push to developers to pursue the AI technology and put it to use in our day to day lives.
Holly Grall of AI development
The ancient game Go is “the oldest board game” played today.
It`s more than 2500 years old, and compared to Chess, this game possesses more possibilities than the total number of atoms in the visible universe ─ so, with this enormous potential outcome, there was no computer that could calculate every move and beat a human opponent ─ until now.
What they did was that they created a neural network that gives ability to the computer to learn how to play games in the way humans do with practice and learning from their mistakes.
The most extraordinary thing happened last year when a program that they created, called AlphaGo, beat Europe`s Go champion, Fan Hui, in five games.
With this kind of technology, the game is changing, and the possibilities of AI machines being smarter than humans is getting closer.
Elon Musk, the founder, and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, promised in one of his interviews that the Tesla car will make an automated trip from L.A. to New York by the end of this year.
This is the one everyone is waiting for; a personal computer driver like in the movie, Time Cop, where Jean-Claude Van Damme enters the car and just says “home” and the car drives him to his destination.
Hanson Robotics made a social robot named Sofia.
The AI software that they developed is giving Sophia ability to process visual data, as she can see peoples’ faces and react accordingly, make conversion, show emotions, and with all of this, she can make interactions with people.
And the most interesting aspect is that she looks like a human girl.
These are just a couple of examples of what we have accomplished so far.
And with what the future will bring, we can only imagine what is to come, but I believe that the internet will be the brain of future AI and the technology of inventing what we see in Hollywood movies is closer than we think.
